The Dregs were the real deal. I saw them play a club in the early eighties from about 10 feet from the stage. They were better live than on the recordings. Steve Morse was and is an incredible guitarist. Andy West was a killer bass player. He played a Steinberger when I saw them. Heavy and deep grooves. Great band!

I picked up this book of Bach cello suites for bass on Amazon. It's in bass Tab. Tricky stuff but not impossible. Girls will be impressed if you can throw down of some of that stuff.

Steely Dan always had great bass players on their sessions.
I learned Josie just because I wanted a challenge. I believe the bassist was Chuck Rainey. When it got called at a jam session several years later, the keyboard player came over afterwards and hugged me.

We're trying Bodhisattva by Steely Dan at our next rehearsal on Thursday night. I thought it was beyond my level but, after a fair amount of work, I think I've got it.

I learned this a few months ago. Took several weeks to get right.

To represent the "heavier" side of the spectrum Karnivool is a good blend of fun to hardness ratio. "new day, eodilin, are great examples.
Haken are another band with incredible technical bass that crosses genres.
Tesseract have some brain melters especially in the tempo and use of techniques.
There are many many more that are even heavier but these bands are able to cross genre and appeal to musicians without too much effort.
5 string is needed for alot of this though and karnivool and Haken use 6 strings for even greater fun.
