Hi All - I'm new here and would like to ask a question about bass pickups. Every time I hear Tool it makes me want to play bass! Since my really old Ibanez has a bad input jack producing a horrible crackle I need to get in there anyway so may as well replace all the pots & pups rewire.. I never really looked into this so what would be good for Tool, AiC, Black Sabbath & Classic rock? 3884832'] Yea it's a cheap one but I like the feel and action but it really could use some better pickups. 3884834']
Let me be the first to recommend the EMG Geezer Butler GZR PJ set. It comes with pups, pots, wires, and output jack. They’re obviously great for Sabbath and all other Classic Rock as well. GZR PJ
Many thanks, I got a little worried my about my question since it must have been done before many times. I'll check that out for sure. Cheers!
I can't recommend these awesome pickups enough! Michael Anthony 78 Signature : Michael Anthony Signature '78
Aren’t AiC tones an active Spector? And Tool is mostly Wal? That would contrast vs. Sabath and classic rock. Perhaps a GZR in the PJ format would work, but may be quite traditional nevertheless (which is a great sound!). but if you wanted to expand a little, yet stay with passive electronics, I’d give Wilde/Bill Lawrence PJs a try. I have the P (P46) and it sounds like a more modern version of the classic P. With some (passive) tone shaping, I can get plenty of classic sounds too (tho I still have a P with Fralins and flats if I want to go old school). I hear their J-45s also have a similar “modern J” vibe... Bill Lawrence Pickups
Yea Tool, I believe is the Wal thing. Mike Starr was doing Warwick from what I recall, but I just went with the Geezer set. I think leaning toward classic sounds are always a safe bet.
Hi All - Thanks again for the advice I'm really looking forward to trying some new pickups in the old bass! Cheers
I put the EMG GZR Butler PJ set in my Yamaha experiment, then actually replaced the factory round wounds with a nice, fat set of La Bella's. Kinda went away from your sound preferences. But.. it only took 10-15 min to install the whole set (strings on). I'm getting the sound I need for my current project and I can throw the rounds back on when I need more Precision. I'm also a Tool fan. Love that bass.
Are those the same pickups as Schecter’s tone monster series? Those were a PJ set with some serious attitude.
I was told they were wound a little hotter than the standard monstertone pickups. Man do these pickups say "here's the beef!"
That has got to be the easiest pick up swap ever. I wish they all had these connections. 3909907']
