Recommend a Bass... HELP!

Hi/Help,

I currently own a MM Stringray and a Geddy Lee JB... I really like traditional style instruments... not super keen on lots of electronics/active bass gear (but I'm willing to consider anything)...

I play in a symphonic rock/metal band... (yes, I know, typically bass players in these groups use active basses)...

I use the MM for drop D and get a great heavy tone and I use the JB as my main axe because of its ultra fast/thin neck and its versatility as an instrument... I also favor the JB because of its weight...

I am leaning towards some sort of P bass... looking at Lakland (Duck Dunn Sig.) and a few others... this additional bass will be tuned/setup for 1/2 step down tuning...

I going to try a few different basses tomorrow... but wouldn't mind a few recommendations to make better use of the time I spend testing basses...

Eb is 3 semitones lower than an F#.


Since you like traditional basses and already have a MM and a Jazz Bass, Precision bass might be something for you. (As you said.)

A nice American Standard, or MIM standard, or Aerodyne.
Or if you are not allergic to Squier, they now have great bang for the buck basses: the Vintage Modified and Classic Vibe series.


Other than a Precision bass, perhaps a Yamaha BB series bass.

bottom string Eb/F# (whatever) you want to call it (our keyboard player always demands it's Eb NOT F#)...

Lakland Duck Dunn!!

it's got a slim and fast neck not unlike the neck on your Geddy, only nicer (because it's a Lakland, and nobody beats a Lakland neck!)
