Recommend a compressor that DOES color the sound!

I didn't get where you thought John M's reply was saying that your settings were wrong. He simply pointed that the pedal you were using was doing what it was designed for which in that particular setting was squashing the low end of your sound. I thought he gave good advice based on what you said it was doing to give you back your lows. I understand that your going for a certain sound though. Perhaps you should try something like a boss bass limiter. It doesn't really squish much but it does add presence.

Hope you like its tone as much as I did. For someone needing light compression, it's probably one of the best for the price. Bongo rates it pretty well too.

sounds perfect, as I'm not really looking to squash my signal (I have a Dyna Comp for that!), but more to just take the edge off and add some presence and shimmer that some comps just seem to do really well. Like I mentioned, if I just add a touch of compression and crank the output a little more it really seems to do great things with pedals and brings them alive!

The Diamond bass comp is really incredible. I saw it mentioned on here earlier, but thought it needed a +1. It's a bit more than $50 though.

The Effectrode PC-2A is a great comp that adds a good dose of color, mostly in the low end.

Interesting - I was after the same thing last year. I liked the Philosophers Tone except that the switch was loud - too loud for live switching... I'm curious about their new bass version. What about the new Billy Sheehan pedal?

That pedal, regardless of how it's set, has a known inherent nature to cut off low end. Even set with the sensitivity off and matching the volume to the unaffected volume, just clicking on the pedal creates an audible reduction in low end.

A compressor reduces dynamic range. Reducing dynamic range has nothing to do with frequency reduction!
