I'm using Fender P and J basses with a GK Backline 600, a 1x12 and a 1x15. I usually just plug straight in. I've got a cheap Behringer compressor/limiter pedal but it doesn't do much and it's noisy. My son is really into guitar effects and pedals, which has me thinking about getting another bass pedal. I play with a pick and I like a somewhat bright/punchy sound. My band plays a variety of alt rock with a bit of country and classic rock thrown in. I don't want any heavy distortion but a bit of overdrive would be OK, and maybe there's something that would provide more of a tube sound. Does anyone have a good pedal or effects unit to recommend?

My guitarist feels my Aguilar Tone Hammer sufficiently warmed up my signal and even added a touch of compression to make it "tube-like". Also, the Tone Hammer has the AGS circuit for some overdrive if you like that sound, but it may require some knob tweaking if you're going to turn the AGS off and on for different songs.
For a bit of overdrive, I use an Xotic Bass BB Preamp.
For compression, when I play a song with some popping or picking, I really like my Demeter Opto Compulator.
Keep in mind I do not use an amp on stage and use in-ear monitors.

Sounds like you might do well with an overdrive/light distortion. It won't drive anything since you're using a solid state head, but it'll add some dirt to your signal.

Im surprised no one mentioned the tech 21 VT. I have never used it but a lot of people swear by it for that tube sound.
To the OP, Tech 21 VT Bass Deluxe (I'd get the Deluxe if I were you 'cause having lots of different presets is fun!)

As another effect, why not a touch of chorus ? Plenty of good ones around and threads discussing the various merits of the Boss CEB-3, Analogman, EHX, Tech 21 has a new cool analog bass dedicated chorus, and the list goes on and on...
Lots of good suggestions here... do you have a pro quality music store near you? If so, I'd go and test drive some pedals and see what you like.
Just got a VT Bass pedal from a fellow board member. Have only had a few minutes to play with it but it sounds like just what I was looking for.
Pretty nice. It adds a brightness and "edge" to the sound, in extremely varying degrees. Kind of like the old Aphex Aural Exciter I used to use for recording; when you turn it off it sounds like you put a blanket over your speakers.
I tried the sansamp bass driver years ago. Direct to amps instrument input it sounded fine. But sounded horrible when useing it to mixer. The zoom B2 doesnt have that problem. While its not the best sounding zoom to my ears, Id still take one over the sansamp cause I need processor to mixer ability with no tone loss or detriment like the sansamp gave me when sending its signal to mixer instrument ins.
