recommend me an active 4 string

you can get a real nice used carvin STUPID cheap..

you might dig the humbucker at the bridge with the J pickup at the neck, thats their most popular combonation..

seach ebay, used carvins go for about half of what a new one goes for- and new theyre great bang for the buck.

Music Man Sting Ray-single humbucker by the bridge.
A new one is probably slightly over your budget, but it'll rock. You might be able to snag a used one in your price range but I dont know that for sure. Check the "For Sale" ads here on TB.

If you'd consider a dual-humbucker you can look at ESP. They have some very meaty-sounding basses with 2 EMG humbuckers and a 3 band active EQ.
With your price range you could buy a brand-new ESP and have some $$$ leftover. Dont forget-you can always solo one pickup or the other depending on the sound you want.
