Recommend me some strings!

Someone else already said it and I second it...For sure check out bass strings online. Lots of options, competitive pricing and always have great service.
I used to play Rotosounds but like others have said they can be tough. I read a bunch of posts here and tried the DR sunbeams. Nice but a little too floppy for me. I discovered Sadowsky Nickel blue labels and now they are on all my basses. 4, 5 and fretless. Similar to the sunbeams but with a little more tension and definition. They fit my ears and my playing style and don't break the bank.
Have fun experimenting!

I'm only quoting this because I love Bass Strings Online and Jason is awesome! The only reason I didn't buy from them this time is because I want the strings for tomorrow.

Rotosound 66. I've tried every DR round string, GHS Boomers, EB Slinkys, D'Addario XLs and Dunlop Nickel Super Brights. I liked qualities in all of them, but for mids/growl I think the Rotos are best. They are fairly stiff and they are a little bit harder on the fingers, but (to me) the sound is worth it. I spent years bouncing from string to string looking for the perfect one, and the Rotos are the only round wound string that has done it for me.

I've switched all my basses to Thomastik Jazz Flats, which sound surprisingly present and feel absoluteky incredible. They cost a lot but last for years, making them a good deal.

Flatwounds are different - nice punch and very low string noise.

Before I switched to flats, I used DR LoRiders and High Beams.

If you liked the broken in sound and feel of XL's, but want more growl, the give the D'Addario NYXLs a try. They have been SUPERB for me so far. They aren't all that bright - more like a regular XL set in it's prime, and they don't feel as stiff as a new XL set - nice and pliable, but not loose. They have a lot of growl, though. And they hold their tuning very well.

I've been very impressed so far.

I like R. Cocco Nickel 45-105 on my P-bass for a few years now. For me, they feel very nice and lively with punchy growl when played hard (& when using pick occassionally), a nice solid thump is easy to get and a low volume mellow tone sounds nice as well... I'm not exactly sure how much of what I like is strings vs. rig vs. guitar vs. setup vs. pickup, etc., but I believe these strings have absolutely contributed to my enjoyment... for what it's worth
