Recommendations for a Modern 5 String Bass

The pickups on the TRBX are an odd size.
The other thing about that bass is that operating the EQ knobs seems to be different than other basses. On others, we typically start with all the EQ knobs at detent (centered) and then adjust from there. On the TRBX I found that I could start with everything boosted, then cut frequencies to taste, or inversely, cut everything and boost the knob that controls what's missing in the sound. String selection and pickup height also was a major factor. The way to dial in sound is, IMO, just not "industry normal".

I think so. I ended up buying three basses:

  • MTD Kingston Super 5
  • MTD Kingston ZX5
  • G&L L-2500 CLF

I bought the MTD direct from them and immediately loved it. I then saw the G&L for sale so I decided to grab it also (since my previous L-2500 was too heavy and a Tribute model).

I then saw a ridiculous deal on a lightly used MTD ZX5 so I decided to jump on that because I loved the feel and tones of my Super 5.

All three of these basses are amazing and have already been moved into my regular gig rotation.

That's a great collection!

I really wanted a Super 5, before I bought my Cort B5 Element, but they were out of my price range.

My B5 sounds really good though, especially run passive into my Two Notes Opus Modeler and it plays great as well.
