With a $3,500 budget you can get one heck of a nice Elwood bass from Maruszczyk. A fully loaded one with all the bells and whistles along with the kitchen sink thrown in.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned G&L. Not the level of a Lull, sure, but if you order from a dealer, you can choose from like 40 color options, pick what fretboard material and radius you want, choose from alder/ash/empress for body, gloss or satin neck finish, etc. It's like what the Fender Mod shop could be, but isn't (IMO). I have several USA G&Ls, including their version of Jazz bass, and they are all very solid players, and would not be near $3,500 USD.

I mean for $3500 you could find a used custom shop bass that is modeled after a 63. There’s also the parts bass option, using mjt and musikraft you could have a 1:1 replica for under $2k. Musikraft lets you choose custom profiles and round laminated fretboards that would be kosher for post mid 62 fenders. There’s quite a wait though. If you want instant 60’s p bass within a week I would go custom shop at your budget.

No Jazz 'scoop' though.

Yeah, there's a few CSs on the market near me, just not quite what I am after. A Sean Hurley, Jaco and a few Blonde Precisions.

I'm a bit late in the conversation but if you really want something 100% custom to your specs, Marin Cano in Spain is the way to go. Got mine since 2014, can't sell it. It's just the better instrument I've had in 35 years. He's really good at all vintage fender style things, like seafoam green, fiesta red, relicing, etc. You can ask him any pickup you want though he works with Lollar as an official dealer, so if you like Nash basses, you'll like Marin Cano basses.

Thanks all, I just happened to find a near perfect to my liking Custom Jazz in a trade that appeared out of the blue. Hopefully arrives tomorrow.

Nice ! might be interesting to swap the pre for the J-Tone version from East too. It offers more option for the passive tone control, AFAIK the J-Retro is kinda ON/OFF only for the passive tone control, there's not any much, only a "flat response" option. The J-Tone works as a REAL passive jazz in passive mode, with a tone control pot that you can use in both passive and active too. Got it on my Marin Cano, no difference between the classic passive electronics onboard plate I still have and the East J-Tone. You can also choose from 2 options when you purchase it from the East website: the classic VVT in passive mode or VBT ( Volume Blend pickups and Tone)

Seriously .........I would buy a Squier 40th Anniversary bass , they would sound as good or better than those basses you listed . Take that extra money and buy a Barefaced cab and a new amp .

Oh yes I remember that guy making youtube videos with some of those instruments in the early 2010's indeed, Terry Romanio, this guy really knows how to make them sound, he still has the one he got in 2009 or something to this day, they seem to age well !


Sadly there's nothing new and his website seems down, did he close his business ?

Terry is such an amazing player, and top notch guy. I am not sure, it doesn't seem Phil has made anything since 2022 as far as I can see.
