Recommendations for custom "Vintage Fender-Styled" Precision/Jazzes?

Hey all,

After a recent purchased didn't quite pan out, I am looking into a custom coloured Jazz/Precision. A few of the luthiers that used to do this kind of work are now gone.

Curious around what's out there now, not specifically looking at relic styled builds but open to it.

I looked at the Mod Shop but limited options particularly for the necks, inlays etc.

Obviously there is Nash at a decent price, I've had a Palir Mustang in the past but now are way too expensive.

I was looking at Elrick's options, which look at amazing.

I am mainly looking at Fiesta Red Precision in a 63' Precision or 64/66 Jazz style.

Though there is a 50th Anniversary Jazz Bass, which ticks nearly all my boxes as well that's for sale locally.

Open to more active options but mostly after the classic Fender sound but better customisable options.

Speaking as a tinkerer, with that kind of budget, I could put together just about anything I wanted, even if I factored in buying this-or-that bass to pillage it for components. (Not just any bass, mind you. I respect "history" too much, to tear apart certain, vintage instruments.)

Assuming assembling your own parts-bass is an option, how does being down in the Land of Oz affect buying individual parts?

Yeah, absolutely. I have done this a few times and did consider a Stratosphere/Warmoth route.

I have a couple of recommendations, all of which I have owned.

Suhr: the best Fender-shaped bass by a guy who worked with Fender during some of their best days
Modern Vintage: Most affordable with the finest appointments and best setups
Bluesman Vintage: typically relic'd but some of the best made basses I've ever owned. I actually have one on order right now
Mike Lull: the absolute best. Period. To stay in your price range, you'll need to find something used, but you won't be disappointed.

Thanks, I've been seen a Blues Vintage in person but hear great things. There's 2 Mike Lulls for sale at the moment on Reverb. They sure look nice.

It may be worth contacting Atlelier Z. In addition to their bread and butter active J basses, they have a line of vintage- style P and J basses and are open to a customisation of materials, electronics, hardware, and finish. The cheap yen makes them a good value proposition.

ESP has a range of vintage-style P and J basses under the Navigator brand with Fiesta Red as a "standard" colour, but I'm not sure they will ship to Oz. Given the quality of their work, it may be worth asking. These come in at USD 3,000 before GST and shipping.

You're in Melbourne. Drop in to Bass Centre in South Melbourne and see what they have. Order a custom Sandberg while you're there.

Look, one of the Ps of the new Player II series has got a nice coral red body paired to a voluptuously black rosewood fingerboard on the maple neck.
Very similar to what you are looking for (if I have read the OP correctly).
Change the pickguard with a gold anodized aluminum one or with a white/creamy one and you are done.
No need to look for expensive FSO from fairly unknown builders in your case in my opinion, but what do I know ? 😊
