Recommendations Needed: Preamp/DI pedal for Live Use

I used the Nordstrand Starlifter for a while, and was very happy with it. It's maybe a little larger than you're looking for, and no HPF, but it's got great tone. I was also very interested in the Trickfish Minnow and the SA Zio when I was considering building a second board. At least for me, they both looked like really good options. Ultimately, I replaced the Starlifter with the Noble, two years ago and I don't see it going anywhere.

The Minnow is superb, but it won't fit on the Pedal Train Nano as the OP required unless you turn it sideways, which makes all the top-mounted IO real awkward. Also, no adjustable HPF. It also needs 12VDC, so your power supply needs to provide that.

I love it, but it's not the most convenient pedal preamp to throw on a board.

I was going to suggest this, but felt it might be larger than what OP wanted. Given the recent recommendations have been on the larger side, seconding this one.

I was thinking that too, but judging by the little other things he listed (wireless and power supply), I think it would fit. Even better if you get a power supply that fits underneath, like the True Tone CS6.

I have mine on a Nano +.

Lots of folks run the GLXD+ as a tuner pedal in front of everything.

It’s the first thing on my pedal board, then out to the hx stomp and so on and so forth.

Makes perfect sense if you use effects or some sort of modeling, or if you want additional tone controls available at your finger tips. The OP only seems to want a clean signal with an HPF and level control. Most basses have volume controls and most decent digital mixers have variable HPFs on each channel strip.

When everyone is using IEMs, I think it makes sense for each player to have tone controls for their instrument at their fingertips. The OP indicated this is not desired because he dials in his sound with his basses' controls. This is not how I do it, but YMMV applies.

IME, the vast majority of PA systems do not give IEM users tone control at the mixing console, although there are some exceptions to this. Usually a choice is made; channels strips can be configured as pre or post EQ. IMHO the channel EQ should be used to dial in the house mix, and usually the house mix has different needs than monitors or IEMs. So it's often better to use a pre EQ send, which means the sound in the IEM mixes is unprocessed. This is why I think it's a good idea for each IEM user to have tone controls at their fingertips.

Digital mixing consoles often allow the audio tech to choose from a variety of monitor send patch points. Depending on the mixing console, post HPF/pre EQ may be an option. However the HPF cutoff required for optimum sound at FOH may not suit the bass players taste.

IME, a DI is almost always provided, especially if the sound system is capable of quality IEM mixes. Not a bad idea for pro bassist to have a DI, just in case, but it's generally not required when dealing with pros.

With quality digital mixing consoles, it may be possible to dual assign inputs and basically split the console into house and monitor mixers. The key idea here is FOH and all monitor mixes get separate EQ for all channels. This is done by dual assigning inputs. I have mixed on several Yamaha LS9 that were set up this way. Basically Fader Level A (chan 1-32) was dedicated to FOH and Fader Level B (chan 33-64) was dedicated to IEM mixes. Each input is dual assigned: Channel 1 = Channel 33, Channel 2 - Channel 34, Channel 3 = Channel 35, etc. Running a board like this gives you extra capabilities but it's more labor intensive and can be somewhat confusing. IMHO the approach makes sense if the board is dedicated to one group and they always use the same mixing console.

Of course it's also possible to split each signal into two and use separate consoles for FOH and monitors.

OR, I missed something…

I wasn’t saying that he should get a stomp, just trying to clear up your question on where the wireless tuner/receiver goes. He would go out from the wireless/tuner pedal, straight into the preamp/EQ/whatever else is on the pedal board. The wireless does not got straight to FOH.

@Wasnex Overall, I agree with you on the use of HPF. I understand that many situations are different, but it makes little sense to set a global EQ and HPF from the stage - especially when the vast majority of mixers have extensive EQ and HPF controls. I like local HPF for my amp if I'm using one, but I want to pass ALL the signal to FOH and let them adjust as needed. That takes some trust in the FOH engineer and equipment, so it doesn't always work out ideally. If I'm doing IEMs, I definitely don't want to set global HPF based on what's coming into my ears.

I'm also more apt to use HPF for DB because many FOH engineers have no clue what to do with it and they make a huge, muddy, woofy mess of it. But if I trust the FOH to handle the DB, I'll minimize the HPF, unless they ask for it.

I understood the signal flow you describe. IMHO adding a preamp/DI or something else seems redundant/unnecessary given what the OP described. However, simply wanting a preamp/DI is sufficient justification to get one.

No need to disrupt the thread further. I have expressed my opinion and will know attempt unsubscribe from the thread :bag: .
 
I'm betting the OP is using this version of the Shure system, which is specifically for pedal boards:


AFAIK this version does not have DI out, but it can be plugged straight into DI or whatever pedal or amp you want.

A little more detail on my situation: In the pop/rock cover band, we have an excellent audio engineer that works with us and I trust him implicitly. But, in the other project the BL runs sound from the stage and I need to able to exert a greater degree of control myself, hence my interest in the HPF. I like the idea of a level/gain control as I play a mix of active and passive basses and having that helps me avoid throwing a wrench into the works. And yes, my wireless is for my bass, so chain is bass -> wireless -> preamp/DI -> FOH…

Any other recommendations?
 
There are, of course, some classic choices.
I've recently tested the Aguilar Tone Hammer and I was surprised by how flat the pedal's frequency response is when you set everything to noon. That's a rock solid pedal (the old version is) which can give you drive and EQ if you like, but runs flat otherwise. I find the parametric mids very useful.

And I know it's gonna give you some color, but the Sansamp BDDI. Super solid unit, beloved by FOH engineers around the globe.
If you don't want the flavor of the Sansamp, there is the Q\Strip. The Sansamp has a baked in HPF and the QStrip has a fixed one, though.

Trickfish Minnow. That one is super clean and super transparent, a great preamp when you don't want to alter too much. I found it a bit sober and a bit dry, but I like my preamps colored. However, it comes without filters.

Broughton Studio One or Broughton Messenger Jr. are exactly what you're asking for, but these are not that easy to come by.

For some obscure reason, variable HPF in bass preamp pedals is still something of a niche item. Given how useful they are, it's hard to believe.

I've never tried it, but there's also the Genzler preamp pedal with HPF, but I can't comment on sound, feel or quality.

@Bonecat Someone mentioned the Grace Alix... I use one for upright but am currently recording a load of comparisons between some of the bass DIs/Preamps I can get my hands on, which should be out in a few days and might help you in this. Spoiler alert, but i plugged my Alix in and it was a great surprise just how much i loved it for Electric and it does have that HPF and a great EQ. On a simpler note, Broughton did a HPF-DI which was also fantastic.
 
I have the little Fishman platinum pro eq as my backup/simple "rig" option. Has tuner, mute, variable boost, eq with parametric mids, and variable hpf - and runs on a 9V battery. Also has 1/4" out with independent volume control for use with a stage amp/monitor, and an effects loop. Hard to beat the feature combo.
