Recommendations on a good Pod with a small budget?

So i've done all my christmas shopping, save for the shopping I want to do on myself. I've never really been one to play with effects, choosing a clean, deep, booming sound most of the time. However, i'm broadening my horizons and recently got into a pretty good hard rock band.

I've always been influenced by Chris Wolstenholme of Muse, and i've really dug the way he plays around with effects, but i've never really tried anything yet.

That all being said, I was wondering what some of you guys would suggest as a good starter Pod at about $150 budget-wise?

Open to any and all suggestions, preferable with pro's and con's listed.

Thanks a ton, and let the low-end live forever.

There's a lot of opinions on PODs and multi-effects around here, but I'll give you my personal experience:

PODs are great for studio scratch tracks and home playing and demoing. We recorded our last record live using a guitar and bass POD to do scratch tracks which were reamped through real amps. We were able to get a sense of playing loud while we got drum tracks, and we got to keep the raw tracks to reuse later. I also wrote for awhile on a guitar POD in my small apt - perfect for not disturbing my wife or the neighbors.

That being said, I've never seen any band get a good stage sound using one. For live sound, it sounds like there's a wool blanket over the amp, and EQ settings don't seem to help.

I'm sure other guys on the board have had luck with multi-effects in live situations, but I've always found them to be Jack-of-all-trades, master of none. Live, I'm in the stompbox camp, building an effects board one pedal at a time. For recording, I've had better luck with GuitarRig 2 (plugin) and a good DI than I ever did with the POD.

Hope that helps! Good luck in your search.

Absolutely! I definitely appreciate the input.

For right now, my sole intent is to just play around at home, practice a little bit with different sounds and see if I can find anything that tickles my fancy. After I find a few suitable sounds for me, and some for the band's sound, I'll probably start building my own board gradually and impliment them in the live setting. I probably won't use the pod in a live setting for the exact reason you gave me. I've read a good bit of literature on effects setups, but being a hands on type person, literature only takes me so far.

Thanks again for the input. :)

I'll add on my question to save from a new thread.

I'm looking at a few multi effects pedals at around the $500 range. The Rocktron Utopia B-300, Line 6 POD X3, and the Boss GT-10B.

I want something that has a true bypass or at least won't mess with my Status bass and Eden amp sound while clean....any exp with these?

Are there any others in that price range I should be looking at?

Thanks.
