Recording Bass

Hi guys,

I connect my bass to Laney RB2 which has a DI OUT. I purchased an interface to connect to this DI OUT and on the other side plug it to a USB port on the computer. I connected the USB plug to my MAC/garageband but it did not work. Garageband recorded something but it was mostly noise and I suspect it was from the Laney speaker
Is what I have done a workable solution?
What already works for me is to connect my bass guitar through iRIG2 to my MAC/garageband but the bass recording is not all that great, long legato notes get cut off. Any solution or should I try with different basses & EQ settings in garageband?
 
Your Mac probably has more than one possible input in addition to your audio interface. You need to ensure that your GarageBand track has selected the right input source. When you are ready to record, you should hear the bass signal coming from your Mac.

You need to figure out which part of your signal path is broken, or not connected correctly.
What's your interface? Have you tried connecting the bass directly into that?

As I wrote the interface that is working is with iRIG2 and my bass is connected directly to that and then iRIG2 connects to my Mac/garageband. This works absolutely fine. But I have a very good Laney RB2 and I want the output of that to go to Mac/garageband and get recorded. This is what is not happening.
 
What kind of cable are you using between your DI out and the interface? XLR? TRS? TS?

Reason I ask is that the Laney has an XLR DI out and it appears that the iRig2 does not have an XLR in. So, how are you connecting the two?

Sorry for my bad communication.

As regards iRIG2, I am connecting my bass guitar directly to iRIG2 and from iRIG2 to Mac/garageband and bass recording works fine. But still not happy with the quality of recording as notes that need to be sustained get cut off as a stocatto.

I want to try the second option of connecting my bass guitar to my Laney RB2 and then from the DI OUT to Mac/garageband - this I believe would give me better quality recording. Has anyone tried this? Will this work?

The iRig2 only has an instrument input. You might be able to take the XLR out from your Laney, use an adapter to make it TRS and then send that to the iRig2, but you may have a level or impednace mismatch that causes nothing but problems. Additionally, the added ring (the R in TRS) may not play well with the iRig2. The hookup diagrams on IK's website suggest going from your instrument, to the iRig2 and then having your amp be in parallel with that, but not part of the signal path. I suspect you'll need a different interface to accomplish what you're after.

You are right - the iRig2 has only an instrument output though there is a output to connect to the amp.
