J/W777, you know, your absolutely right. ive been coming up with several ways to try to accomplish this. right now im just miking 4 of my drums thru a submixer , i then listen to the levels from that small board, from the small board headphone out, then i listen to it at my daw, which is just a firepod with a central station, a powerplay pro headphone amp, and a furman power conditioner. i may not even go with a second firepod yet,
but ive given thought to it and if i do add a second firepod, i may not even use any sub board at all, just go direct into the firepods. this is my latest brain storm, it will keep things simpler and minimalistic.

1 simger in from his effects pedal
2 4 drum mikes into the submixer for now routed out with one line to firepod in
3 kick into firepod
4&5 overhead stereo condensers, drums , into firepod, separate channels
6 bass i
7 miked guitar in firepod
this is hoe im doing it now and i may eliminate the submixer as i mentioned with another firepod. which will give me more vocal ins. (right now im feeding vocals into the emx88s and then rec out to one channel on the firepod, having a second fp will give me separation on the vocals, which i dont have at mixdown now) and just go directly in to the two linked firepods.
NOW the big part of my idea, which could be a cost saver. would be to then take the headphone out jack (w/vol control) straight out of my firepod or central station into a little emx 88s yamaha mixer iver got. once ive levelled everythging thru the firepod.
i havent tried it but i can without spending att kinds of $ on equiiptment.
im hoping this works out, ill give it a shot

keep in mind my recordings are mostly live band at practice, but i choose the best stuff, mix it and use it for demo cds and such..........coffee time the brain hurts......
