For recording, in active basses, what sits best in the mix, simple coil series or parallel...

Depends on the bass, a lot. A Jazz with both PUs on I prefer in series. OTOH when it comes to switchable Musicman (my main recording tools) I usually go single coil and boost bass a little.

Depends on the mix! If you have multiple guitars, especially if there's a combination of humbuckers and single coils, you're going to have to ensure that everything "sits" in the mix. There is no golden recipe. You have to experiment.

It depends upon the situation and the personal preference of the player/listener/mixer.
