Recording play along

Hi! I've seen multiple videos online and on Facebook where fellow bass players play the bass lines to songs and record them. How can I record myself playing to a song so that I can hear me playing instead of the song's original bass? I have Garage band for Mac and a cable to connect my bass to my laptop...

So the very basic recording setup is normally Bass > Audio Interface > DAW (in your case Garageband). In the DAW you can use amp simulators if you want a more realistic sound (amplitube is good).

When you record you would plug your headphones into a monitoring output on your audio interface. This way, you can hear the sound that is in Garageband and what you're playing. When you record the covers you would import the song you want to play the cover on and then play along to the song.

When the bass players record their covers and upload it to YouTube or whatever, they record their bass over the bass line on the song (There ends up being 2 bass lines in the end product). Unfortunately, it would be very hard to take out the base line in an MP3, and would be a lot easier if you had the project. Your best bet would be searching for say, "'Sweet child of mine' no bass."

i using massive eqing on my final mix, ie cut all freq below 80 on the original song and normally i use different tone compared to the original bassline.
