Recording using a Variax MIDI cable?

This is the first time I'll have done this so I really need some advice.
I have a Line 6 Bass Pod which comes with this Variax MIDI cable and I want to know whether I will be able to use it with the computer's in-built recording software or whether I'd have to use another MIDI specific program?

Any help, tips and opinions welcome!

The MIDI is only for controlling the settings and patches of the bass pod, MIDI is not sound it is only data.

Like a MIDI keyboard needs a sound module or soft-synth that generates the sound based on the data the MIDI keyboard sends. It is a common misunderstanding MIDI is not sound.
