Recording with Duet (fireware)

I was wondering which way is the proper one to record the bass via Apogee Duet (fireware) from the Amp DI output(GK MB500 in my case) , using 1/4 input(instrument) or the XLR Mic input ?

From my understanding the XLR is balanced, the instrument in is not. Should only really make a difference in a noisy environment or where a long cable run is required. Maybe also in the case where you are mixing an extreme number of tracks where the noise may add up.

If you're only tracking bass at this time and don't need the other input on the Duet for something else, I would do the following:

• Plug your bass into the GK MB500
• Duet Channel 1: Take the MB500 XLR Out Pre-EQ (DI)
• Duet Channel 2: Take the MB500 1/4" line out for a colored signal to blend in the mix OR
• Duet Channel 2: Mike up your cabinet for the colored signal

Be aware, unless you have a transparent bass cabinet, the EQ settings you use will most likely be very different for recording. I had a GK 2001RBP preamp for a little while and I was surprised at how big of a baked in tone curve it had.
