Recording with MiniDisc Recorders

I just got a new sony 1 gig minidisc player and a little mic to go with it to use for making live recordings of my jazz combo. Not for anything fancy, just for my own enjoyment and to give me a better idea of i/we sound.

Has anyone don't this with this same/similar setup?
Any tips/tricks about placing the mic and what not would be greatly appreciated.

i use a MD player to record all of our gigs. i'm still experimenting with placement - we are a big band and we usually play on small stages - but it depends on your stage layout and who plays the loudest.

the best recording so far came from the audience, actually. someone was taking care of the MD for me in the crowd, and it came out really clear and well-balanced.

How do you record to your minidisc recorder? Through the pa? I'm interested in doing the same thing during shows and frankly I don't know where to start.

How about using a dat? WIll that work? Thanks.

If you use a music stand, clip it to the bottom lip of that. I've clipped it to fabric or some other "outcropping" on the wall of session space or at gigs, laid it on a ledge behind the band on the stand.
Couple of times at sessions I've laid it right on the piano.

If you go to the TBDB site (look in DB side Recordings forum), I have some audio up - COOL BLUES was recorded at a gig with the mic clipped behind the band, SOME OTHER TIME was recorded with the mic clipped to a music stand.

We use a MD with a stereo mic at most gigs. We set up the mic in front of the drums up pretty high and pointed towards the audience, this seem to get a good blend. The only thing we have going through the PA is vox and kick drum so we need a room mic.

We have used this setup for many years, its quick, easy, and while not of studio quality, we can evaluate the performance really well.

This is how we do it. We set the mic on a mic stand a few feet in front of our group.
