Recycled Newbie

Hello all! I'm 41 years old and I played bass in a college band about 20 years ago. One thing led to another and I had to sell my bass and I never picked one up again until about 2 weeks ago. I figured I would have to start all over after all this time. Surprisingly, I managed to knock off a bit of 20 years worth of rust in about 2 weeks.

I just decided that I missed making music so I picked up a Squier J bass starter pack (got a $60 off coupon which made it a sweet deal) I miss the days of feeling cool and I hope to revive that soon. Picking up that new J bass I couldn't even get my hand placement right! Now It's improved greatly. It's not quite like riding a bike!

So I just wanna throw out there that I may need help from time to time. Thanks all! :)

Yeah buddy! Once the bass bug bites, you are forever poisoned by that smooth low end rumble! It may lie dormant for a while, but it will come back again as you have found out!

Ask away! I haven't been here long but have quickly learned there is a wealth of knowledge on all topics bass related.

Welcome! You'll find a lot of kindred spirits on here. My hiatus was thirty years after playing in bands in the seventies and early eighties. Sold all my good gear when life happened. Got the bug again three years ago. Since then, I've developed a severe case of GAS and have four really nice basses and a couple of beaters to show for it.

Were I to do it again, the first thing I'd do is buy Roy Vogt's Teach Me Bass Guitar. I waited a year to do that and wish I'd started going through his lessons sooner.

There's a ton of stuff on the net. The best of the bunch IMO is Mark Smith's Talking Bass. For learning songs, you can't beat Constantine Ismolov's YouTube channel. Paul Wolfe also has a ton of good tutorials.

And try to limit your time on here. It can become addicting. I can't say anything anymore to my wife about all the time she wastes an Facebook and the like...
