i was trying to find sappy bloodwood for a fingerboard, with no luck. i found redheart on ebay with some good sap. never really heard of it before. is redheart good enough for a fingerboard? what does it look like, compared to bloodwood?

If it's actually chakte kok (which I've heard referred to as redheart before) than no it isn't hard enough and the color will fade rapidly to an ugly brown.
Redheart is indeed another name for chakte kok, and I have seen a similar "turn brownish" shade to it, in a lumber warehouse where it apparently wasn't moving too quickly.
Modulus used to use chakte kok a fair amount, but it's no longer a listed option. A few other guys have used it, too (Mollerup, Watson, possibly Lawrence).
Yes it looks great initially but that doesn't last long. One day I'll get around to spraying some of the stuff I have to see if the color holds.
I built a bass back in 2005 which I sold early this year which had a redheart transition block as advertised by woodcraft. I sprayed it with nitro (DEFT cans) and as of the time when it was sold (about Jan 2008) it was still bright red.
