Stumbled across this x-ray of a nail in neck joint of 1679 Stainer while looking up the year he died. Almost looks like the same construction as mine is with the blocks on either side lol. Scroll down to page 147 in the pdf.

Well yeah, there's no neck joint, its just glued on to the ribs! So the nail is a good idea. ;)
