Is that an SR750 or SRX750? 'Cause the SRX705s I have are trans poly, natural, tho I know there was a burst avail, also. And Europe and maybe other places, there was a flat black version avail.

Time to revive an old thread! I'm trading for an Ibanez SR600, which is swamp ash finished in "walnut flat". It's probably the same kind of thin lacquer finish that is on the SR500 because it has the same wear spot over the neck pickup. I'd much rather have it the natural swamp ash color, so figured I'd eventually remove the finish and refinish in a clear oil. Am I right in thinking that it would be pretty easy to sand it off, or would it be better to use a lacquer stripper?

It looks like the rest of the finish (except that one spot) is in good cond, and that bass looks great. Would TruOil rubbed into the worn area seal, tint, blend with the existing color, and make that area more durable?

I have a 505 that is quite beat up finish wise. This post inspired me to refinish it in the future. I would probably do some hard clear finish to preserve the work after the refinish.
I'd strip that right to bare wood, stain it, and finish with Tru-Oil or wipe-on poly varnish. You have to get all that old finish off, or it will come out blotchy. Great bass, crappy finish, same with the SR500.
I've owned the SR500L since 2010. It's a gorgeous bass and I handle it with kid gloves. It does have a couple dings in it where wife hit it with a vacuum cleaner while it was on a stand grrrr...
I also own a pewter sparkle SR300EL that I love for its sound. Do you suppose it would be hard to get off that black finish? I'd love to do a Tru-Oil with a walnut stain on it, but I'm afraid the coating will be thick and I'll botch up the job. The bass sounds awesome-- it's just the finish I don't like.

I’m guessing the painted bodies are not mahogany, and may be multiple pieces. It’s tough to to get back to a natural Finish after a body has been painted, you’d have to get any primer up out of the grain. That’s my only gripe about the SR series, weird colors and fragile finishes. The “brown mahogany” finished SR are a pretty easy refin, the finish is thin, and sands off easily.
