For years my two fav basses have been the ones I installed Reflex Reds pickups into... one PJ set and one single J. 30 years ago!
Over time, on one bass, the four wires became hard and brittle at the point they exited the preamp, which is potted in a rock hard resin, and they broke off. There's no chance of me getting in there without destroying the preamp.
Has anyone had Reflex pickups and successfully replaced the preamp with another type? Or is there even a spare Reflex Reds preamp lying around in someone's drawer? I daresay I could put an EMG or something in there but I always liked the tone of the original, which is purely an amplifier with passive tone and 10k pots. The pickups themselves have virtually no output without the preamp.
I have a pair of Reflex Reds guitar pickups and the preamp for those, but I suspect that preamp will be designed to complement different frequencies to a bass setup.
Anyone? Anyone?... Bueller?
