Regular strings on a 5 string?

Has anyone ever put a regular set of strings on a 5 string bass? I want to extend my higher range, but not my lower range, so I was thinking of getting a 5 string and stringing it E A D G C. Would that work?

Yup, that would work fine. Just need to buy that high C string. There's places online that sell strings individually.

Note: Some 5 string basses are 35" scale length to get a better tone on the low B string. You'd want to make sure you got a 34" scale neck. (34" is pretty common)

Thanks. What about the nut? Wouldn't the groove for the B string be significantly bigger than needed for the E string? Would my E string flop around in there?

Works very well. This lovely fretless of mine is EADGC. I string it with Ken Smith slick rounds. I buy a med. light gauge 4-string set and an addition .029 C string from Juststrings.com.

This can't be a problem as long as you have proper breaking angle behind the nut.

Most of my basses the strings sit on the nut, not completely in like my guitars do. Never had a string pop out during playing.

Going with essentially a smaller gauge per nut slot, the strings might just sit in the nut further. If the slot is too loose you can do the ol baking soda and super glue trick. (I think thats it - never had to do that.)
