reinstall original 70's J bass pickups

Hello, I recently found the original pickups for my '74 -'75 J bass , I'd like to reinstall them at some point. There's a set of old DiMarzio's in there now..at times i feel they are a little too "hot"....I'm not sure which original pickup is the neck and which is bridge ? what direction is correct and how to test to see if they are still functioning correctly ? Cosmetically they look great. Or are the Dimarzios "better" than the stock pups ?

One should be wider than the other. The wider of the 2 is the bridge iirc. All of the wire leads should be towards the controls.
