Double Bass Relicing

***KIDDING***

Snapped a bit of my scroll off before the gig- really put my tone in the crapper- the bass sounded fine, though. :)
I have the piece & will glue it up in a minute, just wanted to hit up the collective wisdom & experience over here to ensure I use the right adhesive. Hide glue?

If you accidentally slide things sideways a little while setting the clamps, and it is (Name your favorite permanent glue) you are sorta outta luck. If, on the othe hand it is hide glue, you can apply heat, especially gentle, moist heat, and take it right back off and try again.

Your bass-- your skills; your call.

Just a question... this isn't like the seams or neck heel or fingerboard- you wouldn't expect to need to remove or repair this break again. Is hide glue necessary in this case, or is it a matter of tradition?

Its the best glue for the job. It dries clear and hard and grabs quickly too, so its easier to get in the right place.

I think there's a place for epoxy, and CA too, but not to replace that scroll. IMHO, YMMV, thank you kindly... ;)

Most likely it will hold...I did a whole viola (my first attempt at lutherie) using that glue, and it has held for 12+ years...BUT, it has never gone to a more humid environment. I know guys that used that specific glue and went to a fiddlers convention (somewhere in the deep south...this deponent knoweth not where), hoping to sell their work there...and instead got to watch all their fiddles slowly disintegrate as the glue reconstituted into the mucilage it really is, and went back to being liquid.

So-- if it never gets warm and humid where that bass is, you are prolly OK. If it does, you'll be sooorrreeeee! :-)

Oh, dear God NO- that is NOT inside the house; it's an old rug that is now on gig/man-cave duty. :D I may be bass dumb, but 17 yrs into the marriage, I know a couple things NOT to do, and getting glue/sawdust/the scent of another woman in the house is at the top of the list. :)

That all said, I am in a pretty dry part of Northern California- and if it pops, I'll just glue it right next time. ;)

Many thanks, gentlemen.
