I'm interested in how people go about learning and remembering lyrics.
Is it something that comes easily and naturally to you or do you have to work hard at it?
Personally, i'm terrible at it. Songs i've known for 20 years still have me struggling to remember certain passages. It's not a big deal for me as I'm a terrible singer and only add the odd backing vocal to some songs. It's similar for chord progressions where I have to practice a lot and work hard to remember all the changes etc.
My daughter (who is only 15) on the other hand has a natural knack for lyrics and chord progressions. She can go through a song two or three times and add it to our set list and never (well.... very rarely) forget a lyric or chord. We've now got around 80 songs in our list and don't use any sheets or tablets on stage and while I occasionally have to ask what key or progression a song is she doesn't have a problem.
As an example, just the other week at a gig a punter asked for a certain song that she had played a couple of times over a year earlier but had never worked up for gigs. In the break she quickly googled the lyrics, had a quick look and started the next set with that song without missing a word or chord.
How many of you have that kind of memory for songs??
