Double Bass Removable neck or large case for air travel

Jed Kriegel uses hide glue to affix a small cork collar (acoustically transparent) to “anchor” each end of the sound post in place, so you never have to worry about it falling during transport.
The case is in my attic, so I’ll likely just check out Gage’s site for measurements…

I remove and replace my sound post every time I fly. I feel like it’s safer to allow the top to flex than to have a post go through. I also rather enjoy setting my post. It revealed a lot to me over the years about placement/sound/response.

As someone who almost never flies anyway, I'd love to have a removable neck... But my wish for a removable neck is simply because it would be so much easier to pack into vehicles and to schlep.

But then there's setup... We have two folding kayaks in the hall closet that are chronically under-used because of a 25 minute x2 setup/breakdown cycle, so I'm leery of having a double bass to assemble if due to traffic I'm late to a jam or worse, a gig, anyway.

In my case it would have to be a new DB with a removable neck; my Alcoa doesn't have an option for a removable neck (??yet??). Even if something was available in wood, the original Alcoa aluminum neck is a beautiful thing that would be hard to say goodbye to. (Although I might seriously consider a CF removable neck.)

Don: There are times when I actually consider the bass re-build / setup time a bonus. I've played plenty of shows where the rest of the band starts playing and I come up on stage and slowly put the bass together. The audience generally finds it a fascinating part of performance art and I ham it up a bit- pull out rubber chickens and old wine bottles from the inside.

I also happen to be working on what I believe is the only removable neck ALCOA in the world as we speak!

I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned having a second body for their removable neck bass. I have the big standard body, but I also have been working on a little electric upright body for rare occasions when the big rig is too much. Same neck and fittings, but a second little travel bass body. It also fits into the neck case so if the airlines loose or separate the big body case from the neck case, I still have a working bass at the show that night....

Another vote for removable neck. Was a huge relief for auditions.
