Double Bass Removable pickup

Hi,

I am looking for a easy to remove pickup type modification I could add to my bass. I don't want it to be on all the time. Just something I could plug into like a pickup but also remove like a clip on mic. I am using this for arco play only (a little pizz every now and then). I have done a little playing around at a local spot with a few guitarist and a poop load of vocalist (all very good singers). They all play some sort of instrument (mainly piano). I need something to gig with them a bit as a band.

They don't notate everything out which makes it tricky for me being a classical bassist. But, they feed me the cord and I'll usually play the root at several octaves with a few improvisations.

I think most of the comments are from the pizz perspective, but there might be some arco sprinkled in. Maybe others can chime in.

I find that the k&k bass max works weel with arco and pizz. It's affordable so it's worth a shot.

The Rev. Solo II would seem to fit the bill for you nicely. The pickup is fit to the bridge rather than the other way around. IMO, having used both, the Rev. Solo is far superior to the Bassmax.

Try a Barcus Berry through a fishman preamp.
It installs in 30 seconds,and sounds decent for pizz and arco.
Perfect for times when you can't bring your own instrument,or you must take it on and off frequently.

When I got my bass last month I picked up one of those 8 dollar clip on piezo pickups designed to plug into a tuner. Figured it might be handy. The other day I plugged it into my rig, just for s***'s and giggles. Went through my eq with a decidely drastic cut on the mids, into some light compression then through the "DI" on my studio pre.....
You know, after playing around with placement on the bridge, I got some sounds out of it that didn't make me want to run screaming. Placement - and how firmly against the bridge the crystal is being held - are obviously a big part of the sound.
I know you're all laughing, but I'm totally rehearsing with this set up while I shop around for a real pickup. I mean, 8 bucks for crying out loud!

Okay seriously though - reading the few "which pickup should I get-" threads, including mine, the constant seems to be that one pickup does not work for all basses - soooooooo - when's someone gonna come out with a DB pickup that can be placed anywhere on the bridge? Not being restricted to installing in one spot might make a pu really versatile.

A small wood shim cut with a utility knife is all you need to wedge it into the bridge wing. Easy to put on and take off. Use a velcro strap to hook the jack onto the strings below the bridge.

It's not cheap, and it doesn't work well for everybody, but the Schertler DYN-B goes on and off easily. I generally leave mine on.

It's a mic that attaches to the top with putty. It's not perfect--no pickup is--but it doesn't have the piezo quack that drives me nuts. Lots of people find it too temperamental, but for me it's been close to the sound of a mic'ed bass with less problems

Which Barcus Berry pickup are you referring to -- the "outsider" model, the violin model, etc.?

Yes, works great. And also read the review at mf - another bassplayer also uses it.
