Removing a set neck?

I received a Gibson Ripper husk with a set neck free. The body has been routed, and sanded so the edges are screwed up. I wanted to remove the neck for another project.

I saw that they remove Acoustic guitar necks by drilling a hole through the fingerboard into the glue joint and steam the neck loose. Once somewhat loose pry the neck out using a clamp neck remover>


A friend suggested just cutting an inch around the neck and remove the body wood with a heat gun.

Any suggestions?

The least damaging way is to score a line around the joint (if there's finish on it) and heat the joint. That will liquefy the glue and it should pull apart.

go with the good old fashioned way!!! Gibson uses traditional hide glue and it starts to come loose at 50°C... so its no big proces and least damaging... but do remove the finish before you do that!!! it might screw you up if you don't

I noticed on the LP they removed the fret board. Hopefully I do not have to do that?

the fingerboard on the LP was bent and had to be removed so it could be straightened. that was my impression.

That is the usual technique for removing a set neck from a Gibson solid body guitar. It is the only way to gain access to the glue line so that steam may be injected.

How bad is the body? Please post some images so that we can get a better idea of what you are dealing with on this project.
