Removing Pickup covers... how?

I just saw a thread in the bass for sale section and a guy has a Fender Am Dlx J V with Sadowsky pickups in it, which I know from having both types are not a direct drop in.

He said that the previous owner did it, but they guy basically took the Sadowsky cover off and put it into a Lakland cover. Well, I don't need to do that, the Fender covers come right off, no problem.

Just wondered if this was something I should attempt. I have Sadowsky pickups, Fender bass with Fender pickups... the pole piece spacing looks like it will work (or at least be close enough to mod easily)... I love the sound of the Sadowskys. Thoughts? How-tos?

Are the Sadowskys potted?

All I recall is that they had silicone along the bottom edges of the magnets. They are in a bass at the moment, so I wasn't planning on taking anything apart until I was armed with some know-how or info.

If they are potted, would it be with wax? Let's say they were... how does one unpot, then repot?

If they're wax potted, try separating the wax from the walls of the cover, and then apply pressure to the pole pieces. Be gentle. You may get by without re-potting. See if the silicone is the soft type. Sometimes you can just pull it away.

If they're epoxy potted, that's much tougher. The covers will have to be cut/sanded off. That's risky.

Do you know if the bobbins are approximately the same size?
