Renting Portable PA Question

My brother in law is getting married next year and he’s looking at renting a PA to play music from his iPod during the reception. The reception will be outdoors with everyone under a 40x40 or 40x60 tent (no sides, just the roof). This will be on a farm so there are no buildings in the vicinity, just open field and the tent. They’re figuring for around 100 people max. He asked if this system would be loud enough for that event just using his iPod. I don’t really know anything about PA systems or live sound so I’m asking you guys. What do you think?

I have to agree with mellowinman, in order for the important frequencies (mids) to be loud enough for the old folks to hear, the highs will end up cranked resulting in a horrible and tinny sound. Two 8 inch speakers plus tweeters wouldn't even work as a good sound system in my house, let alone outside. I highly recommend getting a better system, preferable with a sub. Hell, two 215's would work better.

Is the idea to have background music during dinner, or to have dance music for afterwards? A Stagepas would be fine for the former, rather limited for the latter.

I've used my old Mackie 808M with two JBL JRX 212's and an iPod for a similar outdoor event...
it worked and sounded great. Easy set up and just a stereo mini to RCA L/R cable
for the iPod connection to the Tape In of the Mackie.

since he's renting...a pair of like Mackie SRM450's or QSC K10's would suffice fine...especially for 100 people...but don't forget about a small mixing board like a mackie 802, and a mic if needed for speeches/announcements

The setup I use for weddings is 2 k10's and a JBL sub. I have actually used this config for a live band outdoors and DJ'd between sets with much success. I use a presonus live board for bands, for dj'ing I use a small mackie board. Great pre's on both. I have tried Yam gear - not impressed with the lower line. The higher end stuff is good though.

Save the money on the DJ and use it for the honeymoon. The DIY DJ thing sounds good for this situation.

Lots of options. Find a company that has powered speakers. 1000-1500w is common and your best bet. 15" 2 way speakers will put out some bottom end if you don't get a sub. They should provide a small mixer and mic w/stand and don't forget the 1/8" mini to stereo rca for the iPad. If you can pickup and return the gear yourself you could do it for less than $150. A full service company will charge a LOT more.
