Repair cost for Ampeg SVT6 pro

Here is the seller description of an SVT6 pro.

Does this sound like it's a worthwile project, or are there too many unknowns? AND who do I send it to?

"I do not have a cabinet to verify that it is working, but I did plug it in and turn it on and the power light came on. If I recall correctly, it does have a tube that needs to be replaced and as a result the parametric eq does not work and volume is not as loud as it could be."

Hmmmm i see the dilema, $250 is not THAT much to see if you can score a nice amp. It's tricky, but I would not pay that much for it and would negotiate a lower price.

I picked up a 6Pro that was sold as not working, got it for less than $200, it was simply one of the pre-amp tubes was missing and the effects loop jacks were dirty. Sold it a week later for a very nice profit. Those are a beast of an amp, heavy and long for a rackmount. Very powerful though.

It turns out the guy emailed ME about a trade for my Micro VR head.

This will be a backup to my backup... so I have some wiggle room to learn how to fix it myself.

I DO know enough to NOT electrocute myself...

... now I just need the fridge that is listed in the next town over.

Got it and some cash, so I got about $150 into it.

He said one of the tubes an A-something went out some time ago and he replaced it.

He said it did the same thing again. The upper EQ knobs don't work, but it still works. but not as loud.

I'm not concerned about the weight as I think I will buy a fridge to go with it.

Word. Replace the tubes. 12AX7s in the pre. I'm pretty sure there's 12AU7s in the driver's. I know that one has a seperate gain staging (like biasing) knob for a set of driver tubes. But, I'm not looking at the spec sheet. But anyway, new tubes will cost you about a hundo for them all. From there, who knows. But, then call ampeg for a service department if that don't work. Chances are, it's a quick fix. One little plug or part, daignostic, and labor. Probably 200 bucks to get that thing brand new. And, it's worth it.

That, of course, is only my guess. Anything could be wrong with it. But, I still think it'd be worth it.

He said he’s about 2-3 weeks out but he’ll call with and estimate.

I’m glad I don’t have to ship it anywhere, that would have cost $200 each way...

Well, 105 to virgina from California for my V4-B UPS, so, I'd say 200 round trip. But anyway, awesome! There's a guy here in Santa Maria that does great work too. And his store is like candy land for techies. It's like a giant warehouse of just about any random piece of equipment, parts, switches, plugs, adapters, knobs, dials, etc, you evered dreamed of. Like if radioshack took up half your local mall. I like to get lost in there once in a while.

I know the amp is kind of a dinosaur compared to what’s available now, and even when it came out, but that’s the roadies problem....

I’ll be leaving my 7lb Genz-Benz at home...

Nice plan! really rooting for you, hope the tech can get her up and running soon. I picked up my 6 pro for two months ago and it has become my main amp, replaced a 1001rb and Bassman 300 pro. Sub'ed for updates!

SO..... since we are waiting for the amp repair....

I have never had anything rack mounted. I have always had combos.

This amp is a beast to carry without some sort of handle.

I really don't want to go down a rack mount rabbit hole, but I fear I might.

If playing out is ever a thing again, Should I get a rack that I could put this amp and my Genz-Benz in for backup?

I have heard tale this amp is odd size, what should I be looking for dimension wise. and how many spaces does it take up?

I know there are power conditioners, rack tuners, and other hoozerwhatzits I can get but I think I should keep this simple.

What's your advice?

The SVT-6 is a standard 2-space package. It's 15" deep, so it needs a rack that will accommodate that depth; that isn't uncommon, but you do need be aware of it -- many racks that are intended for effects and such are shallower than that. You should put it some kind of rack though, and you don't need a power conditioner. A switched power strip without the so-called power conditioning is ok, but it's pointless if you only have one device in the rack. Rack tuners, etc, are groovy and all, but it's easy to end up with a total package that's not convenient to schlep around if you get carried away accessorizing your rack. For that same reason I don't advise putting your backup amp in the same rack -- the Ampeg alone is more than 40 pounds; do you really want to transport and heft the weight and bulk of an extra amp every single time you move your rig on the off chance that you MIGHT need the backup someday? Not to mention, if they are in two separate racks, you have the versatility of leaving one amp someplace and still having the backup to practice or jam with.
