Replace stock pickup in MIJ Squier P-bass?

I just acquired a beautiful "A" series Squier P-bass, made in Japan around 1985. The tone control has a problem, so I'm going to replace the electronics. While I'm in there, should I replace the pickup, too?

I'd welcome opinions from anyone who's familiar with the mid-80's MIJ basses as I don't have any other point of reference.

Thanks,

Hozay

I have two early 80's MIJ Squiers. If the pup is good keep it they sound great and IMO you won't find anything much better. The onlp Pup I liked to nail fender's vintage tone is a Fender 62' reissue but like I said leave the pups and just rewire it

Thanks, BB. That's good advice.

I owned two 70's P basses and sold both off since I like the MIJ Squier P basses feel, look, weight and tone much better. I used the money I made for others things. I was lucky to find the two I have both are 83's with 3TS and that great ash grain body showing thru. I paid 150.00 or less for both one just a month ago off CL for $140.00!!!!

The pups sound awesome and if you decide to still swap them out I will buy the old ones if you plan on getting rid of them PM me ;)

You're absolutely right. It's possibly the finest bass I've played (in ~40 years). And like yours, the grain is almost 3D. Beautiful construction finish.

Your previous post, and Martha's, convinced me not to replace the pickups.

Really appreciate it.
