Replacement brass nut for...

Well, then find someone who knows how to cut 'em. Despite assertions to the contrary, any nut has to be cut to fit the particular instrument. While the rough outer dimensions and even the string spacing can be right, the slots simply must be cut for the individual bass.

It'll probably still need to be filed down properly to fit your bass (if the dimensions even fit, which is something you should measure out before purchasing).

That's my point!
I have no problem cutting and slotting a plastic or bone nut...I just don't feel like dealing with brass!!!
Really want one though. May want a couple!!!

Why? Brass isn't titanium. It's a very soft metal as far as machining and the like. It's as easy to file down as bone or plastic if your files are nice and sharp. The biggest pain is that you have to make sure to wire brush the file out periodically because the brass will gum it up due to the copper content.
Yeah, they're not really much different than a bone nut, just more time-consuming. And I might add, for absolutely no benefit unless you play a LOT of open strings (in which case they MIGHT make for a more even sound, but generally don't really make a difference).

I've filed a brass nut before and am in the process of filing another. It just takes more time to file a brass nut.
Thank you for placing it so eloquently. After cutting as many nuts as I have, I really have no patience for another one...especially brass.
