Replacement hex screw in old Yamaha BB tuner

Hi everyone,

So I bought this Yamaha bb1500a bass.It's missing 2 hex screws in tuners.Any idea how to replace them.Where can I orded them from etc.I tried googling but had no luck.

They are likely metric, which makes it much easier to replace. Unscrew one of the others, find a metric ruler, get the width of the threaded part of the screw, the length of the threads, both in millimeters. Please also take a picture of it so we can see the screw head shape. Looks like the screw is black, not gold like the tuner? Any washer or other bushing inside on the non-missing tuner screws?

It is most likely DIN7991. Measure the length (including the head for this type of screw) and the diameter of the threaded part, or just take it to the store and show them.

Ok,took it apart and dimensions are :

Screw head width 7.43 mm
Thread width 3.87 mm
Length of whole screw 8.72 mm
Length of thread 5.75mm

Its a black hex screw.Inside of cavity is white fixed plasticy material and small tiny metal washer that moves and is bit deformed. Pictures below

That’s likely an M4-6mm. Should not be hard to get at the hardware store, or on Amazon. This is just me, but what I would do is get stainless steel screws that all matched and replace all of them together. The plastic bushing and spring washers harder to replace. Might be able to work with out them.

It looks like what you have there is a 'low head' DIN6912 socket head cap screw, probably M4 x 0.7mm x 6mm

This is a rather uncommon screw type that you are unlikely to find at a hardware store. You could probably fit the standard type socket head cap screws if you had to, but the heads would stick out.

They are also available from lots of ebay vendors such as M3-M6 ss Allen Hex Hexagon Socket Ultra Thin Low Flat Wafer Cap Head Screw Bolt | eBay which may work out cheaper for small quantities

Thanks a lot everyone. As you wrote ,no local hardware has screw like this available.Only bigger hex screws.Will have to try and find something online but there is not a lot of options for this exact screw.One on your link is chrome and I d really like black ones that look same as these ones.

I ll try to look for them a bit more.I am sure i ll stumble onto something nice.

I have had good luck finding odd screws at Fastenal. If you live in a bigger city, they may have a brick and mortar location near you.

This is not a local hardware nor Amazon item. It is McMaster-Carr if you in USA. Depending on the location, you can get that the same day from online order. Cool thing they have dimensional drawings for all screws so you can make sure they are right. Not cheap though... But convenient.
