just bought a 2004 thumb bolt-on, for cheap. i think im one of the only people in the world that likes the feel of these things. punchy, growly. but MEC pickups are missing something. whats the best thing to replace them with?

replacement pickups for thumb

I got a 59L1/LN1 which the guys at the Warwick forum advised me to get.
first of all its a hard fit, the wires dont come out from the corner of the picukp but from a mid-lower point on the bottomplate. this means one of the two suspension springs is going to wreck havoc on the wires!
after you have found an ad-hoc solution for this you'll face a tone that lacks presnce in the high-mid spectrum.
be prepared to become a mushy mudball in the mix.....
to complete the package my girlfriend dumped me on the night I intalled these...
edit: I have a Streamer LX5. I dont know what these pups would do to your Ovangkol bodied Thumb but they sure made my super bright Streamer become a black hole of tone!
the slap tone on the other side is very nice (though it gets lost in the mix too).

I had an older Thumb NT and I swapped out the MEC's for EMG pick-ups.
I know some say the MEC's are a lot like EMG's, trust me they're not!!
They opened up the bass a lot more.

Can you explain what you mean by 'opened up the bass'?
I'v even thought about taking out the preamp and fitting an old set of DiMarzio I have in another bass.
