Replacement preamp for Peavey TL5?

I believe the preamp on my Peavey TL5 has gone round the bend.
It has gone from a tone monster to tone deaf with horrid output.
Does anyone have an affordable recommendation for a replacement to return this beauty to her former glory?

Yeah, if this started after you put in a new battery, it could just be that it was a dud. Otherwise, I know that Bassmods makes a fairly affordable preamp that is supposed to sound good, but it looks like right now they only offer it prewired on a jazz bass control plate. Also might be worth it to check the classifieds and see what's out there.

It's not a very complicated circuit.
You could have one knocked up easily enough.

Of course, there's always the standard array of aftermarket preamps to choose from.

Probably the most bang for the buck preamp I can think of would be one of the SKB models from Tone Monster. Tremendous value.

Worth checking into on YouTube and around TB.

Yeah, that is a great value. Johnny Long likes those quite a bit. If you don't know him check out his YouTube channel .

Beyond that you can pick from any of the big names.

Shadakaka!

I have one of the first generation ones, replaced the faulty preamp with an audere pro Z, major improvement.

My first choice. The Pro Z runs ~ $180 and has more options than you'll use in a lifetime. I've opted for the Classic modules as they show-up on occasion in the classifieds...new one will set you back $129. Here's my favorite configuration for a 5 knob / single switch:

These things will "wake up" your bridge pick-up which is the magic behind the design.

I'd find out (maybe someone here knows) whether or not the Super Ferret (or the VFL's) are low or high impedance, makes a difference in which preamp to use.

I'd agree they were better basses than their tone would suggest, and every time I opened the back panel and saw that big PC board, it always made me nervous as to how ruggedly it was built.

Lol - yes, Johnny's quite the character. Actually, that was where I first found out about hem, from his awesome YT videos.

I have them in 3-4 instruments & I am beyond pleased with them. In every instance, it was a great improvement. Super easy to install too.

Hi, I saw your post that you had a schematic for the thread on a TL5 series 1 - Dynabass preamp. I have a TL5 series 2 where the preamp is slightly distorting (battery is good). You wouldn't happen to have a preamp schematic for a Series 2 TL5? I've tried to get it from Peavey but so far no luck.

Thanks,
