Replacement speaker for Mesa subway 115

I picked up a mesa subway 115 with blown speaker. I have a Eminence delta 15A that I was wondering would it be a good replacement speaker. I will be using with 4 string p bass and play older classic country and classic rock . Looking for warm mids and highs running a Ampeg pf500 head. Play a lot of r-5 and walking style bass.

No, the Delta is not every remotely close.

First, are you SURE the speaker is bad? The number of blown drivers that we have seen is very, very small. Be sure that you troubleshoot this correctly.

if the driver is bad, the correct replacement driver is available at our on-line store under replacement parts/speakers.

Yes ,sorry agedhorse. I should have been more clear. I was told the speaker had blown and someone had removed it. I had tried looking through old post ,and online to see what was original but, seems like different ideas on what was original. I will check Mesa page . Thanks

The designer of this particular Subway cabinet (the very @agedhorse in this thread, as well as ALL the Mesa Subway bins and the Subway amp heads) built this (cabinet + speaker) to work together, as a system, if you will. Virtually all good cabinets from home hifi to sound reinforcement to yes, bass guitar cabinets, are designed and built to use a specified driver(s) to deliver the posted performance. In fact, get it wrong enough, and the cabinet's design will shorten the speakers life !

Guitar players change speakers all the time, as MOST of the time it's an open backed cabinet where the function of ports, internal volume, bracing, all the parameters are FAR different than sealed bass guitar cabinets, way more forgiving, though they too, are designed for specific drivers. I'm quite sure Randall Smith would have very definite ideas should you decide to slap any 'different' driver in a Mark Boogie combo.

To just throw any old speaker in the cabinet that just happens to fit the cutout in the baffle board is the same thing as rebuilding an engine, and using any 4, 6, 8, 10, or 12 pistons that just happen to be the right OD with the rings as the ID of the cylinder bores. Good luck with that.

This reminds me of when people would buy the Bose 802 PA speakers sans Bose controller and then be unhappy with the sound. Go with the original if not for the resell value if it should come to that.

I laughed out loud when it was discovered that the speaker was missing and not just blown. That must have been a powerful surge of energy that launched the speaker out of the cabinet. LOL. But yes, blown and gone are very different.

Have you heard the story of the possible first man made object in space? Not Sputnik, but during an early underground nuclear test they had a large metal plate over the tunnel shaft and when the nuclear device was detonated it was hurled upward. It was visible in one frame of film and they could estimate from its velocity that it could have reached six times the Earth's escape velocity. It most likely was vaporized in what would have been the biggest plate charge ever, but maybe, just maybe part of it survived and went into space. That was Pascal-B, 1956, roughly a year before Sputnik 1. The real estate ad listed the bore hole as "blown".

That...is...awesome. Too bad it is the result of a weapon of mass destruction. Have you seen the most recent picture that documents the space garbage in near earth orbit? We leave our stuff everywhere.

Great deal for a nice box, especially since you already have a quality 15" speaker that would work just fine, despite what the Church of Mesa members say. I'm not trying to troll anybody. If you want to spend the money it's still a good deal. It just would be interesting to hear the differences in sound because don't forget, the CREATORS are looking for a sound THEY like.

That's what I figured too. And since I have the old Eminence and really nothing in it, if I blow the Mesa cabinet in to pieces , or space, or destroy the speaker .I won't be out much for a little work and enjoyment.

Since I designed the speaker, I am uniquely qualified to state how a speaker will affect performance. I’m not talking about tone, I’m talking about bandwidth, sensitivity, mechanical power handling, damping.

The stock driver was selected with all of this in mind, the differences are very significant (night and day comes to mind), and the Delta 15a is an inferior driver for this cabinet. I know this for fact.

It would be helpful to the OP for those who don’t know what they are talking about to quit giving bad advice.
