Trying to figure out what needs to be done re. my Ampeg BA-500 amp (one blown speaker), I contacted Eminence and was told that they custom made the speakers for a manufacturer — short history course... in the 1986, St. Louis Music (SLM) bought MTI (owners of the Ampeg brand), and in 2005, SLM was subsequently bought by Loud Technologies. Prior to 2007, Ampeg (and Crate) manufacturing was done in the US. After 2007, it was sent offshore to somewhere in Asia. The Ampeg BA-500 is a pre-Asia product, built between 2004 and 2007.
Back to the present... After being told by Eminence that the speaker I'm referencing is no longer in production (or anything similar), nor that they have a reconing kit for it, they suggested their Kappa Pro-10A (which seems like a great speaker, but maybe a bit of overkill when compared to the original speaker specs of the BA-500).
Not being able to go any further with Eminence, I contacted Loud Technologies for direction and suggestions.
Not much help; basically blowing me off with vague info that is easily found in the user manual — but note, the info given to me was incorrect.
After my third email to them, I finally got the low down; they didn't design the amp, SLM did, and they had no detailed info on it... Basically saying "So go find yourself an authorized service center and deal with them."
My questions were simply... 1) Do reconing kits for these particular speakers exist (after much online research I found nothing)? . . . And, 2) If I decide to go with replacement speakers, what would be recommended, based on the cab design (which, from everything I've read on talkbass.com, is a very important consideration when choosing speakers for your cab.
So, after all of the above, what I have is a suggestion from Eminence to use this Amazon.com: Eminence Professional Series Kappa Pro 10A 10" Replacement PA Speaker, 500 Watts at 8 Ohms: Musical Instruments . . . And direction to try a service center to get the damaged speaker repaired.
I'm thinking that the repair is going to cost upwards of $80 with shipping fees for one speaker. And if I do both speakers, maybe $160+... But what I'll have are the original speakers designed for the cab.
The cost of the new speakers — 500 watt each — will be in the region of $240 (maybe $160 if I go with 350 watt speakers)... But will they be a good fit for the cab design?
Also, I'm thinking the amp head has a lot to do with the matter also.
Any help/advice would be very appreciated.
