I bought a nice used Peavey G V five string bass. Put some new strings on, and they are so low at the nut, that when tuned to 440, they ALL buzz. Then I got to looking, and I think the previous owner had thicker gauge strings, and the nut looks heavily filed and deepened. Much deeper than my other Graphtec nut basses (Peavey Cirrus and US Millennium).
Now I'm pissed. I don't want to use thicker strings, as I love the Cirrus strings. I just replaced all the tuners with new black Gotoh sealed, got the thing almost all "blacked" out except the chrome HIpshot bridge, and now this.
I'm no luthier. I didn't realize nuts come solid, and someone needs to file the slots in them (at least my googling appears to have told me this).
So, I can either sell the thing as is, and let someone deal with the nut, or try and replace it myself, if I can't find a local shop who knows what they are doing.
Has anyone seen pre-slotted nuts? Any insights into this would be appreciated.
