So I'm auditioning for an STP tribute band next week, and if it takes off, I may look into tailoring my rig more to Robert's tone.

I figured I should be able to get close with my Titan and PH412, and my NS2 P/J should do fine from the bass-end, but wanted to see what other people have used to get close to his tones without going all out on his Marshall Plexi+Bassman uber-vintage rig.
I know he used Eden 3x410XLTs and 3x212XLTs and miked them live, so I may try that first and keep my Titan because it's so versatile. Or go back to a sealed cab like the Berg NV line.

Anyway, thanks!

dude, just play to the best of your ability with your bass down by your knees and the neck up by your face ;) you've got a killer rig with a fender tone stack, so you'll be fine.

btw, on their last tour he used a pod xt into a power amp and two 810's and said he nailed his recorded tone.

Lol I think it's more off his right hip, but that's just me... ;) I've been working on that actually.
I have the hat and sunglasses on the way also. :D

Yeah I remember reading that also about his current setup. I'm prolly just over-thinking it. Or tired of carrying a 150lb cab around already... ;)

It'd be handy to have a P-bass with the tone knob half rolled off and a foam mute for a lot of songs. Makes them sound a lot better. A lot of the very staccato songs like interstate love song, for example. And Sin I think it is from Core.

If you can play the songs well I wouldn't worry about trying to match his gear. No one but you and the other guy in the crowd that plays bass would know or care. You can probably approximate his tone well enough with the gear you have.

If you want to get new gear just because you want to, that's fine, but I wouldn't call it a necessity. No one will be able to tell the difference. It will matter more if you look like the guy than if your bass tone matches his.

Sorry, I checked it out and Naked Sunday is the one I was thinking about. And I'm not sure but I don't think DeLeo actually uses any foam mutes, but for some reason a lot of his tones come out sounding like it. There're actually a couple spots in Naked Sunday even where the mute wouldn't sound right, but he's doing something interesting on the chorus with the attack. Not sure how to get that kind of sound actually ;)

i think rp might have been enjoying a little foam himself...on top of one too many beers. didn't wanna say anything, but it's too funny not to, going on about this foam ;)

anyway, the only gear any people would care about is your bass, and i don't even think that's necessary.

mostly jazz or pj. core was an svt cranked up as well as a di, the other albums were an alembic f1x with a sans amp rack unit plus whatever stuff they used in studio.

forget all that, it's all in the fingers, and most amps will be able to recreate 99% of those sounds.

I always thought the pickup spacing on his Model T was a bit extreme. Then I looked at my SB-2 and realized that it is completely normal and that all PJ basses should do the same. ;)

Don't forget Talk Show! Some of my favorite Robert tones are from that album.
