Resigning via e-mail

Yikes. I was planning to give 2 weeks notice today, but my immediate boss is home sick, and the big boss is out of town for 2 days.

I always think the "proper" way to handle this is face-to-face, but waiting until there is a week and a half until my new job starts also seems like bad form.

Do I send them an e-mail?

Email to HR is fine, tell them that you are resigning and that you will speak to your boss face to face when he gets in, but you need to hand in your notice today to enable you to start on time at your new job. Its not a big deal. I had to call my boss on holidays to give noticeo n the 2nd of January once!

Depends on the size of the company and how business operations work. If your boss is the one who really needs to know you are resigning so that he can begin making plans for a replacement, then you should get in touch with him to let him know ASAP. If you think he would take it personally that you didn't tell him yourself, but instead sent an email to HR, then call him at home or on his cell. Chances are he/she will understand this more and than they would not hearing about it until close to your last day. I don't like to burn bridges when it comes to business simply because you never know how things may work out down the road, and you want to leave good, lasting impressions on folks when you leave.
