Restoration help – Ampeg 810

Looking for some advice on whether I should purchase this Ampeg SVT 810 AV as a doer-upper.

Would I be able to get all the stuff off the grill using some method/s? If not, I’m thinking of covering over the old grill with a speaker fabric.

Are these 2007 (?) Chinese 810’s any good?

Are these Eminence speakers any good?

I am also planing on taking the tolex off and coating it with Duratex!

It’s listed for 800 AUD (500 USD) but I might try to get it for 500 AUD (320 USD).

Any knowledge you wish to pass on would be great!

Thanks

Sounds like a fun project. I'd jump on that.

Yes, the Eminence are great drivers. I believe it's what Ampeg has always used.

Yes, you should be able to remove it. If not you could always build a new frame. (or like you said cover over the existing) Original Ampeg grill cloth would look great. You can find it on Ebay, Amazon etc. Just search Ampeg grill cloth, you'll get tons of results.

As far as Duratex, I love the stuff. Easy to work with, looks great.

Thanks for the reply! Any advice on how you would attempt to remove the stuff from the grill?

Make sure all of the drivers are good.

The jack plate appears to be missing nuts and washers on the bottom 1/4" jacks.

No idea what market price is down under. I don't think $500 would be a bargain in the US.

You can redo the grill cloth or order a new grill.

Thanks for your reply!

The drivers appear good from the images, but I would play through it and make sure they are all working.

I’ve never seen one at this price here, although I haven’t been actively looking for a long time or anything. I think the price is so much lower just as it is butt ugly. The listing also includes brand new uninstalled caster wheels, metal corners and foot cups.

I agree that the 800 AUD is a bit too much though, I won’t be buying if he won’t come down on price

Do a 9v battery test. If all cones move the same direction, the drivers are all connected properly and functioning. Doesn't necessarily mean they are all good. Listen for dragging voice coils.

If one moves in the wrong direction, it's either dead or connected backwards.

Unless you have an unusual disposition and enjoy the hellish task of removing Tolex and glue, in your place I think I would price up worst case for the materials required, add a reasonable allowance for my time (adding generous contingency because it is a b*****d job), and then see if it still looked like a good deal with all that added to the purchase price.

Especially as the box refinished and refurbed, but completely away from factory spec, will probably be very hard to sell for anything but a bargain price.
