A '77 StingRay was dropped off with me a couple of days ago to wait for it's trip to it's new owner. As I tested out the bass, it was obvious the original mutes were of no use. The pads were like lumps of coal! I've pictured this before, but this time I took better pics of the job. The pad material I use is self-stick-on just like the original, and same density. I've also seen folks use old computer mouse pads and two-sided tape too.
Start by removing the bridge, then removing the thumbscrews and mute plate. I scrape off the old pads with a sharp blade, then use automotive brake parts cleaner to clean any residue, but you can use nail polish remover, etc.
I like to cut the foam pad size out to 11/16 length, 3/8 width, and the material I use already comes in thickness between 9/32 to 5/16. Align and stick the new pads in place, and reassemble the bridge, and thump away!
