Return a bass for....smell?

I once got a great deal on a nice Precision bass because the case (though not the bass) smelled so badly of cat piss. Heavy doses of leaving it outside open to the sunlight and Febreze for several days took care of it.

But the guys in my band LOVED teasing me about my "P(ee) Bass!"
I don’t know why but I bet it still smells and you got used to it

I think it depends on the smell. Most of my experience is with guitars, not basses. I played a couple of CS Fender guitars recently that both had a musty smell to them. On $3700+ guitars that puts me off, relic or not. It wouldn't so much with an old instrument.

I like the smell of rosewood and nitro that Gibsons used to have and Martins still do. Gibson started adding vanilla scent in 2012 or so and I don't like that, but I'd still buy it.

I also had one of the mentioned Ibanez guitars and that case STUNK. I would stuff it with newspaper wads and leave it on the balcony in the sun all day. After tossing the newspaper the smell would be drastically reduced, only to return overnight. Bleck!

I returned a cat for smell.
Back in 1975, I was a young hippy, living up the BC coast, building a geodesic dome and spending my spare time playing my 1966 P-bass. ... Some how I took in a stray cat, which I thought was a decent thing to do. ... I always, as I do today, kept my bass out of the case so, I can reach for it anytime I wish. ... I guess, while I was old the cat crapped in my Fender case and the lid closed, I blamed the cat for that too. ... A few days must have passed before I discovered it. ... I then opened the back door and returned the cat.

I have a 1999 Ibanez EDB605 that i bought that year.

Its made from synthetic material (luthite) and it has a weird gasoline smell. It plays great, but the pickups are lacking.

I’ve looked into selling, but I guess its kind of obscure and not great, so idk if i’ll be able to find a buyer that will pay enough for me to even bother with the trouble.

Im just surprised that the smell never goes away. Its as strong as the day i bought it.

I played it a ton as teenager, but i regret it now. I cant put it on wall display cuz it makes the whole room smell weird, so it just stays in the case.

I’ve gotten the smell out of gear I’ve wanted to keep. The cases that have been Febrezed I’ve tossed and purchased new. To me Febreze is as an unwanted smell as any other. Cig smell can be cleaned off solid finishes.

Baking soda/ground coffee can do wonders when left on ratfur scrubbed then vacuumed.

Smells?
It depends on the severity. I have forgotten to ask sometimes. I found a first gen Ashbory that was otherwise mint. Took all of ten minutes to clean. Case went in the trash.

Don't buy it. Return it. People that can't learn to take care of their instruments are morons.

Nearly everything I own, music or pro audio, smells of stale beer and cigarettes. They are tools of my trade, have provided good times for patrons, and the tools put money in my pocket.

How's that for 'lack of care'? Does your car take you to work and get icky road stuff on the tires? People who can't take care of their tires are.... morons...
