Returning DI signal to amp for mic'ing purposes

Hi all,

I'm interested in 'live' studio recording and I've read somewhere you can record direct first and then send the signal back to the amp and mic it. I'd like to do that, but I'm not sure how. If I'd record to the computer, should I DI from the amp and send the signal back into the return? Or should I take the DI somewhere else?

Many DIs like the Radial JDI or J48 have a parallel out (thru) that takes the original signal to a 1/4 - inch jack. You can run that to the input of your amp, then mic the amp and run the mic to one channel on the board. The XLR output of the DI goes directly to the mixing board. Then you can adjust both inputs to taste.

Thanks for the reply, but I'm affraid I didn't really made myself clear. I'd rather not mic while the rest of the band is playing because I'm affraid of bleed and stuff. That's why I'd like to record direct at first and then record with mics later, without the rest of the band. The problem is I'm not sure how to return the signal to the amp.

Why not just record with the band through the board, then later on, without the band, re-record from your miked amp on a separate track or virtual track on the same channel? Or do you have to have the first take?

If you have to do it your way, most professional boards have direct outs on each channel, so you'd just take the direct out from the bass channel (track), run it to the input your amp, play that track by itself, and record the miked amp back onto a different channel.

However, it's all a waste of time, in my opinion. I've always liked the sound of my direct-recorded tracks, and emulator effects can be added to give you whatever amp/cab combo you desire, if you must.

The term for what your trying to do is called "re-amp".
If you do a search here, using that term, you'll find lots of info.

Yup, and a passive DI works well for that since it does not care which way the signal is going since it is basically a transformer. You just need a special female to female cable.

If you go to the Radial Eng site and download the manual to the ProDi, it describes how to to it.
