reverb.com scam?

Meh, this doesn't trigger high on my "unethical" meter. It's just the nature of the system. The fact is that Reverb cannot really prevent you from selling gear elsewhere just because you have it listed on their site. I'd wager a good portion of the stuff listed there is also listed on other platforms. If they don't like it they should charge to list an ad.

So essentially i lump this type of thing in with going 5 over the speed limit or killing an insect.

Nice you feel that way. Good to know ethics are malleable.

Hello,

I am in contact with a seller on reverb.com. I contacted him following an ad that seemed to have been there for 10 months. He answered me via reverb's messaging service and suggested to continue on his personal email because, according to him, the reverb costs are too expensive and he decided not to go through them anymore. This seller has been on reverb for 2 years and has 168 reviews on reverb and all positive ...

He seems to know the gear, I offer him 20% less, he's ok a priori and ok for a PayPal transaction. The deal would be outside of reverb.com

What are the risks?
An opinion ?
Thanks
Smells like a dope fiend move to me? But I always go with my gut. Usually you can get a feel by talking on the phone a few times if it's a scam. If your protected by PayPal then go for it. If the guy has 168 positive reviews what are the odds you are the first negative?

WOW. Everyone is so quick to call foul.

Seller has it listed on Reverb, could be the usual stupid price tag or maybe a bargain. OP makes their 20% less offer and it's accepted. If the bass was at a bargain price then the seller is now down 20% for the offer and down Reverb and any other fees; can't say I blame them for looking to step away from the platform.

Just curious, have you ever been seriously burned in an online transaction?

Of interest to me is the observation that sellers and buyers seem to be abandoning Reverb for this site. Perhaps if the good people @Reverb take notice of this as well, they would instead charge to list goods just like this site does. IMO, Reverb’s business model is one that is comfortable with losing business to a competitor who is just fine with charging to list their goods. One can pay by month here for peanuts, and this site appears to be comfortably profitable. Why doesn’t Reverb do the same? Because they are greedy AND grossly incompetent. The bulk of goods advertised on Reverb seem to be listed by businesses rather than individuals, whereas the opposite is true here. If you want to buy any really tasty gear like Bergantino or boutique instruments, you’ll not find them on Reverb. They’re all here. Reverb is for noobs who are ignorant of this site.

Money is a great motivator. I get that.

I’m in the camp that Reverb is a service, and that come with a service fee. 5% And at some point I’ve agreed to rules and codes. “When you list an item you have an opportunity to review and accept the fees that you will be charged.”
“Do not take any transaction off-site, nor encourage anyone to engage in any offsite transaction of any kind.”

Every platform has scammers, so it’s nice to have chance of protection when things go wrong. On Reverb, seller advertised a used pedal, and in communication tried to upsell me a new one for an upcharge. So at least I could report to RV. CL is more like no shows and mysteriously ended communications. Seems like FB market place is 50% scammers, all the gimmicks like selling for someone else’s, or someone other than the cut will pick it. I only sell local but always get hit up to ship and all that. I’ve had good luck on TalkBass and the similar sites for tuba and trombone.

It may have been mentioned here already but Reverb scans your messages and will come after both of you if you try to do a deal outside of Reverb.

A seller wanted me to do the same thing and Reverb was on me like white on rice. It should be noted I didn't do the deal, I prefer to protect myself and what little money I have.

I'm sure it's going to be fine. But, you lose the reverb protection.

Although, PayPal is protected also. So, I'd just go for it.

Whenever someone offers me to settle out of reverb, I jump on it. Ha, it actually just happened today. Met the dude in Buellton, about an item I had on reverb. Saved the fees, shipping, and taxes on both ends.

The scams, I've noticed, are very obvious. Like, send you a message about buying something for their dad, and you can't message them back. Or, just off putting and half demanding.

Just for the record, this is one of several common scams.

* One goal is actually to get control of your phone number (a Google Voice hack) BBB Scam Alert: Sellers beware! Fake buyers want to hijack your phone number
* Other scams often involve the classic “I made a mistake transferring you money” deal.

In short, if anyone messages you asking to do a sale off of eBay or Reverb, or wants to use any sort of payment other than PayPal (or alternatively Interac, Venmo, etc), it’s likely a scam, and you won’t be able to get your money back. Keeping it on the site enables both buyer and seller protection.

It's also somewhat likely that guys account has been compromised, and the person who took control as trying to get the sale off of Reverb so they can take your money... In other words you may not be talking to the actual account owner.

Exactly what I was thinking. At the very least I'd ask for proof that the seller actually has the item; e.g. ask the seller to take a photo of the item with a piece of paper bearing a (random) hand-written message that you specify next to it.

I've come across this before. The issue is Reverb purchases have certain protections. if you do it outside Reverb it's own your dilemma if something isn't awesome with the purchase.

I can't speak for this seller obviously, but I've been in this exact position before. Someone wanted to buy my bass, and I asked if he would mind just doing PayPal G&S outside of Reverb for a lower price. He paid less, and I received more, and he was still protected. Sounded like a no-brainer for me, but he freaked out and insisted on using Reverb.

I sold it to someone else... lol

I sold an expensive bass a while back (NYC Sadowsky). The buyer on Reverb offered my to move offsite and we both save money. I opted to keep it through Reverb. Too much risk if it went sideways somehow on a $4000 bass. I'd rather pay those fees and feel secure.
