Reverse engineering vintage Haz Labs pre

It looks like we've been searching for exactly the same pots. I've been through every source I can find, and the only pots that are close to this are from small sellers outside the US who all claim they are metric CTS or Alpha or Bourns pots... Yet none of those manufacturers catalogs have anything like those pots, which makes me wary as I only buy directly from the mfg or authorized distributor to make sure I am getting original components.

The new pots I have contacted to build are very close to the pot you have. The M8 threaded shaft measured 0.311" in diameter (matching your 7.9mm measurement) with a pair of calipers. The mounting hole in my Rebop is 0.335" in diameter, so it fits perfectly. The original Spector knobs fit the knurl correctly. Only difference is the overall total shaft length of 18mm vs 20mm of the original which means the knobs now sit about 1/16" closer to the body then the originals, which had plenty of room.

Who knew potentiometers can be so hard to source? Seriously, reverse engineering the Haz and making a PCB was FAR easier than finding potentiometers to fit these euro Spectors!

While these dimensionally were correct, I couldn't find the B100K Linear with center detent, so that's when the hunt for a reputable manufacturer started.View attachment 5169187


I actually measured mine with calipers, had to get the internet to do the metric conversion for me :bag:

The four i have ranged from 0.309 to 0.311, I agree it sounds like what you've been looking for are the same as what I have.

I'll see if I can fit the module in this bass's electronics bay, if so, once you get the new pots, I'll see how it sounds with an '87 Ibanez :thumbsup:

I noticed on your ebay listing you have the L & W dimensions for the PCB listed, do you also have an H measurement for the -01/solder version? So I can check all three dimensions for fitment....

....oh, I meant to ask - how are the splines on the shaft counted, considering the split? If my original knobs will fit, that would be awesome

I did my own search and found these:
ALPHA POTENTIOMETER B100K 100K 16MM LONG SHAFT WITH CENTER DETENT CLICK GUITAR BASS

If you don’t use a locking wash, they do just fine in the current Euros. They have a 6mm split shaft. Euro knobs do fit. Early Euro knobs (maybe 2000ish) were slightly different probably required a 1/4“ split shaft.

I noticed on your ebay listing you have the L & W dimensions for the PCB listed, do you also have an H measurement for the -01/solder version? So I can check all three dimensions for fitment....

The PCB is 14mm (0.552" with my antique road worn calipers) from bottom of the board to the highest point, which are the 3 large caps. I'm also attaching a couple photos showing how it fits in my 2008 Spector Rebop, and the height comparison of the 18mm pots (Bass and Treble pots I am having built) vs 20mm pots (Volume and Blend) from EMG using the original knobs.

Note: This Spector is a bit beat up. I just bought it a couple months ago from guy in a metal band who hated and was looking to trade it for something flashier. She needs some cosmetic TLC, but sounds amazing.

Since it was mentioned in another thread, would it be possible to put the LHZ in a stompbox?

Yes, it would be very easy to do! I'd just grab an enclosure from a supplier that also does powder coating like stompboxparts.com (probably go with a 125B size), get it pre-drilled with 3 pot holes (Bass, Treble, Volume) a hard-bypass switch, and DC input jack, powder coat it a retro hazard yellow color, and throw a cool logo on it.

I'd name it "Hazard Lamps" as a nod to the HazLabs name, and make it look like an old-fashioned warning or radiation sign, maybe distressed looking.

Inside, I'd mount the LHZ on insulated standoffs. Wire it to the pots like it was on a bass, but instead of pickups it would be wired it to the input jack, the output would go to the output jack, and power from the DC input so I didn't have to worry about switching off the battery.

I was thinking it might be fun to play with adding a straight (no coloration) boost before the LHZ as I have a feeling this might make a really interesting OD pedal for guitar as well due to the way the chip reacts when pushed.

Exactly what I needed - I think I can fit it where the battery is now, and relocate the battery to lying over the top (with its insulating wrap on), flat between the pots & cover.

Makes me wonder if I could feasibly do some sort of "loaner" program on the LHZ-02 units? Basically have a unit that potential buyers could try out for a few weeks for just the cost of shipping, to see if it fits and does what they hope it will do. Hmm...

Not a bad idea....


Really all you'd need is a bit of plastic or wood or some such, just a rectangle box, in the same size & shape? If simple enough, might not even need to be returned.....

Or do you mean something that has the topography?, I guess?, in case some components may need to sit inside the boundaries of just a straight box shape?
Maybe a reject board, with some dummy components?

It would basically cost the shipping fee (send and return), plus a nominal charge for the non-reusable connectors. Let's say you have a month to install it and give it a good run. If it's not a good fit, back in the box to ship back.
If you want to buy it, you can either ship the loaner back and get a brand-new unit or buy the unit you have for the difference in price.

On my end, incoming units get cleaned and put back on the test rig to make sure they are still fully functional.

@Maidenfloyd: You should know that @fibz is the OG of pickups and preamps! He was one of the original 2 beta testers when the LHZ was just a hobby project here, and his extensive cataloging of sound samples every time he swapped something out was the inspiration for me to keep developing.

As soon as he posted the LHZ samples to his archive, I started getting inquiries.

Earlier this year I acquired a 2006 Spector ReBop 5 DLX with original equipment, and saved the entire TonePump and potentiometer assembly when upgrading the electronics. Since Spector does not seem to have a schematic of how the older non-trim TonePump preamps are wired, I thought I'd create a diagram for reference and share it here.
